Why early stimulation?
Children’s development is cumulative in nature and hence the early years of a child’s life is very important in development. 1
In a simple term, early stimulation is to provide children with lot of opportunities and expose in different situations that helps in awakening their skills and to develop naturally.
The development and well-being are dependent on both the stimulation and sensitivity that they receive early in life.
Healthy development means that children of all abilities, including those with special health care needs, can grow up where their social, emotional and educational needs are met.
Parental cognitive stimulation enriches children’s cognitive and language development by engaging children in activities that promote learning and by offering language-rich environments.
What do you mean by early childhood stimulation?
Early childhood stimulation is the interaction between young children and their caregivers, providing children with the opportunity to learn about their environment from the earliest age.
In practice, stimulation is about parents and other caregivers being responsive to the emotional and physical needs of their children from birth onward, playing and talking with them (even before children can respond verbally), and exposing them to words, numbers, and simple concepts while engaging in daily routines like reading books, singing are core components of childhood stimulation. Having a safe and loving home and spending time with family like playing, singing, reading, and talking are very important.
Children’s active participation in learning activities, the quality of parent–child interactions, and the availability of learning materials are the important features of the home learning environment that help to support children’s educational development
To harness the neuroplasticity and neurogenesis, early childhood, from 0–5 years of age becomes a crucial period for long-term cognitive and psychosocial development.
Early stimulation can improve young children’s ability to think, communicate, and connect with others.
Families are children’s first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Encouraging caregivers to play and interact with children aged 0–3 in a stimulating way improves children’s cognitive development.
Early Stimulation helps in
Optimal child development requiring multiple inputs including a positive and stimulating home environment.
Global monitoring of the provision of positive and stimulating home environments is important for tracking progress.
Assessment of the home environment can provide valuable information on support for early child development and learning.
Early intensive interventions demonstrate statistically significant improvements in cognitive and language outcomes in children compared to eclectic treatments obtained in the community or other comparison groups.
The home environment is considered as a powerful influence on child development.
