Developmental Delays
Cognitive Delays
Cognitive delays affect intellectual functioning, causing learning difficulties often apparent after school entry, and may hinder communication and play. Causes can include brain injury, chromosomal disorders like Down syndrome, though often the reason is unclear.
Motor Delays
Motor delays impede a child's ability to coordinate large and small muscle groups. Infants may struggle with rolling or crawling; older children might be clumsy. Fine motor delays affect tasks like holding small objects or tying shoes.
Social, Emotional, and Behavioural Delays
Children with neurobehavioral disorders like Autism and ADHD often have social, emotional, or behavioral delays. They may struggle with social cues, initiating conversations, or coping with frustration, leading to prolonged tantrums.
Speech Delays
Speech delays can be receptive (difficulty understanding) or expressive (reduced vocabulary). Oral motor problems can also cause speech production disorders. Causes can be physiological or environmental, though many are unknown.
